The Classicist with an Atlas blog aims to provide useful travel tips and inspiration, but also thought-provoking content about sustainability and culture that can help us to explore the world with more insight into the places we visit and the people we meet.

The other aspect of the blog is my thoughts on various faith-related topics. The Christian life is a fun but challenging one, and it can sometimes make your head spin a bit! I'm no theologian but in the faith section of the blog, you can find a few of my thoughts on it all.

Guides, tips, stories, and reflections

1) I've never had a boyfriend (or even been on a date!). I've always wanted a relationship but it's something that's just never happened for me. Sometimes I still get really sad about this, but I'm happier being single now than I have been in the past.

2) I have zero savings. Like, less than £100. My car's MOT wiped me out in the autumn and the money I'd managed to put aside was all used up. I also end up in my overdraft a lot! But then I remember that savings are there to be used, and the fact I could pay off my MOT means I had been sensible enough to put money away in the first place. Also, this is largely because I travel whenever I can, and I'm soooo grateful for the amazing experiences I've had while exploring.

3) I sit and passively scroll all the time. My brain sometimes just switches off and I go into 'rot' mode. I feel guilty about this all the time, but I've started to remind myself that it's okay not to be productive 24/7, and rest is important. I know I need to kick the habit and rest in other ways, but the mindset is definitely starting to shift.

Museum Mondays: Diocletian's Palace 🏛

If you'd just spent the last 2 decades ruling an empire, where would you want to spend your twilight years? This is the Palace of Diocletian - the first Roman emperor to ever retire!

Now housing a lot of Split's Old Town, Diocletian's Palace is one of the best preserved Roman sites in the world. The structure is rectangular with corner towers and 4 gates - Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Iron - and was built as both a luxury villa and a military camp (castrum), divided into 4 parts with 2 main streets. Athough the interior now contains shops, homes, and restaurants, there is still plenty to see of the original complex.

One of the main attractions is the peristyle, featuring a 3,500-year-old Egyptian sphinx, perfectly preserved despite no protection from the elements. The peristyle was the centre of the palacial complex, and was used primarily for ceremonies which would often involve the worship of Diocletian himself by his subjects.

Underneath the palace are the cellars, famous now as the backdrop for Danaerys Targaryan's Meereen dragon enclosure in Game of Thrones. These, as you might imagine, were used primarily for storage, but over the centuries they have had many uses, including as an area for wine and oil pressing, residential spaces, a marketplace, even a waste tip!

Other fascinating areas within Diocletian's Palace include the Temple of Jupiter, the Vestibule, and the Cathedral of St Domnius. However, if you're finding it hard to visualise as a Roman villa, I can absolutely recommend the Diocletian's Dream virtual reality experience. Located not far outside the Golden Gate, this is a brilliant way to take your experience to the next level!

Museum Mondays: The Royal Logis of Loches 🏛

Loches is a beautiful historic town in the Loire Valley. This is the Royal Logis, originally built in the 14th century. It was here in the Great Hall that Joan of Arc famously visited in 1429 after her victory at Orléans in order to press Charles VII to go to Reims and be crowned king, putting Loches on the historical map as a key part of French history.

The only part of the chateau as we see it today which can be dated earlier than the 14th century is the watchtower, later named the 'Agnès Sorel tower'. Agnès Sorel was known as "The Lady of Beauty" and Charles VII was so in love with her that he named her his official mistress, making her France's first official royal mistress. This made her a highly controversial figure, but even more so was the fashion she introduced into French society, in particular, dresses which were said to have such low necklines that they left ladies' chests almost completely exposed! Despite the controversy surrounding her, she was loved by a lot of courtiers - after the Hundred Years War it is said that she was a key player in bringing back the extravagance of previous royal courts. Georges Chastellain wrote that Agnès had the "status and rank of a princess" and "the most beautiful bed coverings, the finest tapestries, the best linen and blankets, the best crockery, the best rings and jewels, the best cooking and the best everything". Loches was her favourite residence, and Charles VII gifted her the Royal Logis in the 1440s.

The Logis was later expanded by both Charles VIII and Louis XII, but when the Valois dynasty returned to Ile-de-France in the 16th century, it fell out of use as a royal residence and was mostly used as a court of law (and a prison for revolutionaries in the early 1790s). This was the case until the Indre-et-Loire Council opened the site to visitors in the 1950s.

⬇️ 3 ways I'm slowing down in 2025 ⬇️

1) Not putting pressure on myself to post on this account all the time 😜 sure, it would be nice to have more followers and more engagement with my content, but this is not my job. I have a career, friends and family, I volunteer with Latin Link, and I have a podcast (and now a radio show linked to it too!). I can't do all of it all the time. I see so many people on here posting constantly, always travelling, and making high-quality content, but my reality is different and that's ok. So this year, the pressure is coming right off. I'll post when I post, I might have long breaks, but that's okay! ❤️

2) Getting outdoors more 🏞 for someone who works on Dartmoor, I'm terrible at getting out for walks and exploring the vast gorgeousness that is the landscape outside the window.

3) Reading! I LOVE reading (anyone else in their fantasy/romantasy era?) and I have such a long tbr! This year, I'm taking more time to sit and read because it really fills my cup, and just because there's a lot on, it doesn't mean I can't take the time to curl up with a good book as well 📚

Museum Mondays: Parroquia San Sebastián de Panguipulli 🏛

This beautiful Swiss-style Capuchin church was built and consecrated in 1947 by the priest Bernabé de Lucerna. Made entirely from wood, it is an important local landmark and has become a symbol of the municipality.

There has been a Christian mission in Panguipulli since the beginning of the 20th century, not long after the Chilean government started to promote large-scale European settlement in the Araucanía region, which was in the heart of Mapuche territory. The Mapuche were mostly able to resist the conquests of both the Incans and the Spanish, however, in 1882 after a long period of conflict, the Chilean government successfully incorporated Araucanía into the country.

In 1903, Father Bucardo María de Rottingen founded the Panguipulli Mission, leaving it in the care of two Bavarians: Father Donato and Brother Inocente. We don't know much about what they were like, however, the priest who came after them, Father Sigisfredo Schneider, was a staunch ally and defender of the Mapuche people and used his influence to defend them however he could. The town even has a street named after him! To this day, Panguipulli remains a key place for those who want to discover more about Mapuche culture, and Indigenous people still make up around 25% of Araucanía's population.

By the end of 2025, what would you like to say is true about yourself? 😌

I don't tend to make new year's resolutions - I think most of us would say that we often slip up by about day 6, and then it feels like you've failed not just at the year, but yourself 😭 instead, let's find ways to grow, to improve, to pursue a life of gratitude, kindness, humility, and joy ✨️

For me, Jesus is my joy. I am beyond thankful for everything he has done for me. He saved me from addiction, he saved me from depression, he saved me from myself and my own wrongdoings. If you want a life of true joy, I encourage you to chase him, and you might just find it.

So, by the end of this year, I want to say that in every season and circumstance, I was grateful for what I had and hopeful for what was to come. I want to say that I was kind to others and to myself and that above all else, I followed the lead of my God, who is always good, always trustworthy, and always faithful ✝️

I've been debating whether to post a 2024 recap reel - I don't want to be fake and pretend like everything was rosy, because it wasn't. Last year was a difficult year in many ways. Emotionally it was incredibly draining, finances have been limited, and I don't feel like I was especially disciplined or productive in all of the ways I wanted to be. That said, there were so many blessings too, so I'm celebrating those and holding them tightly as I move into this year, hoping it's onwards and upwards from here 🧡

Ever wanted to see some conservation in action? Go down to Lanhydrock and see the ceiling of the long gallery as it goes through cleaning and restoration! You can see all of the 17th-century plasterwork up close and in detail and it's honestly amazing 🤩 be quick though! You only have until the end of October 🙈🍂

Autumn definitely requires a visit to a ruined castle before you go on that woodland walk 🏰🍂

This castle's construction was started by the Pomeroy family in the 15th century, but before it was completed the property passed to Lord Seymour, brother of Jane Seymour, the third wife of Henry VIII.

It is said that Berry Pomeroy is the most haunted castle in England...one story tells of a White Lady who haunts the dungeons, believed to be Margaret Pomeroy who was imprisoned there by her jealous sister 👻
